Professor A.J. Welch is an international authority on the optical and thermal response of tissue to laser irradiation.  AJ has published over 250 refereed archival publications and over 300 refereed conference proceedings. In addition, AJ has authored or co-authored 41 book chapters.  AJ co-edited and contributed to the first and upcoming second edition of Optical-Thermal Response of Laser-Irradiated Tissue, a widely used reference in biomedical optics.

Professor Welch was one of the founding members of the Biomedical Engineering Graduate Program at the University of Texas.  Through his career he has mentored over 100 graduate students, demonstrating a deep commitment to mentoring young engineers.   This symposium was born out of that commitment.     When asked what sort of event he preferred to mark this milestone, he proposed a symposium that would continue to advance biomedical engineering.   Each session is chaired by one of AJ’s students and showcases current research and trends in laser-tissue interaction.
